Windrush Day

Windrush Day, while not a public holiday, commemorates the anniversary of the arrival of up to 1,027 Afro-Caribbean migrants to the UK on the Empire Windrush in 1948. These individuals were recruited by the British government to aid in post-war recovery efforts. Despite their contributions, many faced severe discrimination upon arrival. Established by the British government in response to community calls, Windrush Day serves to honor the legacy and contributions of the Windrush Generation and their descendants. It provides an opportunity to celebrate their resilience, acknowledge their invaluable contributions to British society, and reflect on the challenges they have faced. Through various events and initiatives, Windrush Day fosters awareness, education, and dialogue surrounding issues of immigration, multiculturalism, and social justice.
