National Women’s Day (South Africa)

National Women’s Day (South Africa) is a public holiday that is a part of a month-long celebration of women and the contribution they have made to their country. It is a commemoration of the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women made to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, delivering a petition of more than 100,000 signatures to address the country’s pass laws, which required those defined as ‘black’ to carry an internal passport, promoting segregation. The women also stood in silence for 30 minutes to oppose the Apartheid Government. There are many celebrations across the country.
