Martyrdom of the Báb

This day is a commemoration of the 1850 martyrdom of the co-founder of the Baha’i religion, known as the Báb, accused of being an apostate and executed in Persia by order of the prime minister of the Persian Empire by a firing squad of 750 men. In 1909, after having been hidden away in the interim, the Báb’s remains were entombed in a golden-domed shrine surrounded by spectacular gardens on Mount Carmel in northern Israel. The Baha’i community commemorate this day with prayers and scripture and do not attend work or school on this day.
