Martyrdom of the Báb

Martyrdom of the Báb is a solemn commemoration of the 1850 execution of the Báb, one of the co-founders of the Baha’i Faith. Accused of apostasy, he was executed in Persia by a firing squad of 750 men on the orders of the prime minister of the Persian Empire. After being concealed for decades, the Báb’s remains were finally entombed in a golden-domed shrine surrounded by magnificent gardens on Mount Carmel in northern Israel in 1909. On this day, the Baha’i community observes the martyrdom with prayers, scripture readings, and refrains from attending work or school as a mark of respect.
