International Women Day

International Women Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a call to action for worldwide gender parity, to lobby for women’s rights, and fundraise for female-focused charities. Each year has a theme, relating to women’s rights, with the goal of raising awareness and creating a gender-equal world. Purple, green and white are the colours of International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day has its roots in 1908, when 15,000 women rallied on the streets of New York protesting for shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. The following year the Socialist Party of America honoured the strikers by establishing a National Women’s Day. The first International Women’s Day was observed on 19 March 1911, attended by more than a million people rallying in Europe. International Women’s Day was adopted by the United Nations in 1975, and since then has been celebrated annually on 8 March. The day is a major global event, with events and campaigns taking place in countries around the world to celebrate the achievements of women and raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
