International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed on November 25th, was established by the United Nations in 1999 with the aim of raising awareness about the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and advocating for its eradication worldwide. The date was chosen to commemorate the Mirabal sisters, political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960, by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo.

This day serves as a call to action to end violence against women in all its forms, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage. It seeks to mobilize governments, policymakers, civil society organizations, and individuals to prioritize efforts to prevent violence, protect survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.

Through awareness-raising campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and the distribution of resources, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women aims to promote gender equality, empower women and girls, and create a world where everyone can live free from the fear of violence.
