Independence Day (Belarus)

A national public holiday in Belarus, this day celebrates the liberation of Minsk from Nazi occupation in 1944. The day is celebrated with fireworks, concerts and a large military parade. It was originally held on 27 July. In 1996 a referendum was held where almost 90 per cent of Belarusians voted to change the date to 3 July.
