Greek Name Day: Pelagia

Greek Name Day are often named after a Christian saint or martyr and are mainly celebrated in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox countries. On this day, the holy person is celebrated, as well as anyone named after this person. Often, these celebrations are more important than birthdays.

Pelagia is a Greek name, derived from Saint Pelagia. Saint Pelagia was a Chistian hermit in the 4th to 5th century. Pelagia died as a result of extreme asceticism, locking herself away in a cell and abstaining from all physical pleasures. The lifestyle had emaciated her to the point she could no longer be recognised, leading to her death. According to Orthodox tradition, she was buried in her cell.
