Feast of St Basil

Saint Basil (Aka Saint Basil the Great) is considered one of the great leaders and thinkers of the Orthodox Christian church. Historically, he was a bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia (modern day Turkey).  He was a theologian who opposed heresies of the early Christian Church. Today, the Feast of St Basil is celebrated in many Greek and other Orthodox homes; a special cake is baked on the eve before this day with a gold or silver coin hidden inside, and gifts are given to small children in his name.  It is also customary to visit homes of friends and family to sing New Years’ carols.
