Chrysanthemum Day (Japan)

Aka the Double Ninth Festival, this day is observed annually as one of the five seasonal festivals in Japan. Odd numbers are considered active numbers, with the number 9 being the ultimate, so the 9th day of the 9th month is the highest level of activeness. People celebrate the festival by decorating their houses with flowers of chrysanthemum and pouring sake for each other with corollas of chrysanthemum floating on them. The first festival took place in 910 CE, when the Japanese Imperial Court held its first chrysanthemum show. Chrysanthemums are considered auspicious flowers, denoting longevity and eternal youth.
